Popular Rapper And Actor Passed Away At 54

West Coast rapper Saafir, known for his solo music and collaborations with Xzibit and Ras Kass as part of the Golden State Project, has passed away at the age of 54. According to a statement shared by Saafir’s son, Lil Saafir, Xzibit revealed that the rapper died on November 19. Xzbit shared a tribute post on Instagram.

“I can’t believe I’m writing this right now, but don’t know what else to do at the moment. Approximately at 8:45am this morning, my brother Reggie known to the world as Saafir passed away. We have so much history I can’t even explain what I’m feeling right now. We surrounded him and let him know how much we loved him. He can rest now.”

“Friends, Family, everyone that rocked with us from the Hip Hop community, if you could be so solid and reach out for @chopblack his younger brother, and @lilsaafir his son, the family really needs to be supported during this time. That’s all I have right now. My soul is crushed.”

We love you Bro. Rest In Power”

Saafir, born Reggie Gibson in Oakland, California, was a highly influential rapper and actor whose career spanned over three decades. Known for his intricate wordplay and unique delivery, Saafir became a key figure in the West Coast hip-hop scene of the 1990s.

He gained early recognition with his appearance on Casual’s Fear Itself album in 1994. That same year, he released his debut album, Boxcar Sessions, which is considered an underground classic for its avant-garde production and complex rhymes. He landed a major record deal with Quincy Jones. Saafir was also a member of the Hobo Junction crew, a collective of skilled lyricists.

Beyond his solo career, Saafir formed the Golden State Project alongside Xzibit and Ras Kass. The trio collaborated on various tracks, earning a cult following for their dynamic chemistry and sharp lyricism. Saafir also ventured into acting, most notably portraying Harold Lawson in the 1993 cult classic film Menace II Society.

In his later years, Saafir faced significant health challenges, including spinal injuries that left him partially paralyzed. He is survived by his brother and  his son, Lil Saafir, who is also pursuing a career in music.

Rest in Peace.
