Playful ICE Arrest Mugshot Explodes Online — And The Real Reason Will Surprise You

An arrest photo released by ICE San Diego has gone viral, drawing millions of views online — but not for the reason officials might have expected. Instead of focusing on the captured migrant, the image has sparked widespread debate over how it was staged, with many suggesting the photo was deliberately framed to draw attention.

The picture features 42-year-old Diego Hernandez, who appears downcast in shorts and a South Park T-shirt, standing beside a female ICE agent. While Hernandez faces the camera, the agent is turned away, dressed in tight black pants with her hair draped over her shoulder. The unusual composition of the shot quickly overshadowed the subject of the arrest.

Since being shared on X by ICE’s San Diego office this past Saturday, the image has been viewed nearly 25 million times. Typically, ICE structures its arrest photos to obscure officers’ identities, but in this case, the positioning drew immediate notice. Rather than Hernandez being the focal point, the officer’s stance and appearance became the central talking point, fueling the photo’s viral momentum.

“Am I f–king crazy, or is this them trying to humiliate a random immigrant and using an ICE agent’s fat delicious a– just to make sure it gains traction,” one X user remarked in a repost of the image.

Others echoed similar sentiments. “The Cartman shirt, the ICE agent facing the wall for no reason other than to show her a–, this is art. The parallels one could draw from this are endless. Satire is dead,” another wrote, comparing the scene to satire rather than an official government release.

A third user chimed in with, “Anyone have the federal agents @.”

The comments continued to snowball, with one person joking, “If I renounce my citizenship, does that mean they will send her… to my house? asking for a friend.”

Beyond the viral frenzy, ICE confirmed that Hernandez has a lengthy criminal history, including multiple DUI convictions and repeated illegal re-entries into the United States. He was arrested in San Diego after being flagged to federal authorities by local police, and officials have since confirmed that he faces deportation to Mexico.

“ICE San Diego arrested Diego Hernandez, 42, an illegal alien from Mexico with multiple convictions for DUI and repeated illegal re-entry into the U.S.,” the agency said in a statement released alongside the controversial photo. “He chose to break our laws again and again. He will remain in ICE custody pending removal- because public safety comes first.”
