Elon Musk knows how to capture a headline — and he did it again during President Donald Trump’s latest cabinet meeting at the White House.
Now officially serving as head of the Department of Government Efficiency under President Trump, Musk holds the title of “special government employee.” His close relationship with the president has even made him the unofficial nickname among insiders: “First Buddy.”

Despite some predictions that Musk and Trump might eventually butt heads, the two powerhouses continue to present a united front. Musk’s attendance at the cabinet meeting, surrounded by some of the most prominent figures in the Trump administration, was yet another public show of solidarity.
This isn’t the first time Musk has made waves during a Trump administration meeting. Not long ago, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy was caught passing Musk a handwritten note denying rumors of internal drama. This time, cameras caught Musk holding a notepad clearly marked “Top Secret,” instantly setting off a wave of speculation online.

One detail that drew particular notice: while all other officials had nameplates displaying their titles, Musk’s simply read “Elon Musk.” Some critics claimed this was yet another sign Musk was being treated with a higher status — even above Vice President JD Vance.
True to form, Musk leaned into the moment. His “Top Secret” scribble, complete with dramatic underlining and multiple exclamation points, seemed deliberately designed to feed media speculation. And it worked — the internet quickly lit up with theories about what Musk might be planning. Could it be a secret strategy to boost the economy after recent tariff moves? A confidential new plan for taking on China? The possibilities were endless.

Musk, who is no stranger to controversy, has previously joined President Trump in questioning the status of U.S. gold reserves at Fort Knox. He’s also been criticized by his own AI chatbot, Grok, for spreading misinformation. But if this latest stunt is any indication, the billionaire entrepreneur is simply playing the media at its own game — and winning.
Of course, not everyone was amused. In light of the recent high-profile Signal chat leaks, some suggested this was the wrong time for antics. Still, Musk’s “Top Secret” note — seemingly a tongue-in-cheek jab at media obsession — shows he knew exactly how to control the narrative.
Reactions on X (formerly Twitter) poured in fast. “Elon knows how the media works, so he trolled them by writing ‘Top Secret’ knowing they’d grab a photo,” one user said. Another added, “Classic Elon. A troll genius.”

But not all the feedback was positive. A critic commented, “This is a cabinet meeting, not a circus. Musk needs to treat these responsibilities with the seriousness they demand.”
Whether it’s a clever joke at the media’s expense or a poorly timed stunt, one thing is clear — Musk once again got the last laugh.
