Samantha Carress lost her beloved Golden Retriever Luna and is now warning other dog owners of the hidden danger lurking in everyone’s home.

Every dog owner is aware that sweets and chocolate can affect their dog’s health a great deal. While sugar may affect their teeth, chocolate, which contains theobromine and caffeine, ingredients toxic to canines, may cause diarrhea, vomiting, seizures, and even death if taken in large amounts.

Although Samantha was aware of this, what she didn’t know was that another ingredient, that Luna ate by mistake, could cost her life.

Namely, the dog found a pack of lemon-flavored chewing gum and ate it.

Unfortunately, most sugar-free gums contain Xylitol, sugar substitute deadly for dogs.

Mere hours after eating the gum, Luna’s liver started failing. Sadly, when Samantha finally realized what was wrong with her pet, it was already too late for anything to be done.

The heartbreak she experienced was immense because she knew that Luna’s death could have been prevented had she known of the dangers of the gum.

Samantha is warning dog owners to read labels and make sure their pets stay away from any products containing Xylitol.

Even small amounts of this sugar substitute can cause liver failure at dogs.

Some of the most common household items containing it are sugar-free gums, peanut butter, and baked goods. Also, candies, drink powders, and ketchup and BBQ sauce.

As a matter of fact, Luna isn’t the first dog that dies after consuming Xylitol. Namely, over the past ten years, Xylitol poisoning cases have increased by 3,000%.

Some time after Luna ate the chewing-gum and started feeling unwell, Samantha and her husband took her to the vet’s. They were told that the only way to save her was an emergency transplant, which cost $20,000.

Heartbreakingly, Samantha was forced to say goodbye to her fur baby.

Samantha’s warning for dog owners is to be extra cautious.
