People That Are ‘Abrosexual’ Explain What It Means

The concept of being “abrosexual” has garnered attention on social media platforms like TikTok and Reddit, with individuals sharing their insights into this fluid sexual identity. Many people, including those who identify as abrosexual, have expressed how long it took them to understand and embrace this aspect of their sexuality.

What Is Abrosexuality?

Abrosexuality is characterized by a fluid sexual orientation that can shift over time. According to Medical News Today, an abrosexual person may find their attractions change not just from month to month but even from day to day or hour to hour. This fluidity acknowledges that sexuality exists on a spectrum, allowing individuals to identify with different sexualities at various times. As such, the groups to which they feel romantic or sexual attraction can vary significantly.

Healthline further elaborates that abrosexuality goes beyond merely changing one’s mind or adopting different labels; it reflects a genuine evolution of experiences over time.

Personal Experiences of Abrosexuality

Emma Flint, an abrosexual writer, described her journey in a candid piece for Metro. She noted how her feelings could fluctuate dramatically, saying, “One day I felt like I was a lesbian, yet days or weeks later, I’d feel more aligned with bisexuality. My sexuality was fluid.” Before learning about the term abrosexuality, she felt adrift, as though lost at sea, and often felt like a fraud due to her changing identity when discussing her orientation with friends and family.

Emma revealed it took her three decades to come to terms with her abrosexuality. “I only discovered the concept of abrosexuality two years ago, at the age of 30,” she revealed. “I had long struggled to pinpoint my sexuality because it seemed to change so rapidly. At times, I would chastise myself for being unsure, but it wasn’t indecisiveness; it was my identity evolving.”

On TikTok, user @zoebriskey elaborated further on the meaning of abrosexuality, stating, “Abrosexuality is sexuality that’s fluid.” They clarified that it differs from pansexuality, though an abrosexual person may identify as pansexual at some point in their life. The term derives from the Greek word “abro,” meaning “delicate” or “graceful,” capturing the essence of the fluidity within abrosexual experiences.

Another Reddit user shared their perspective, explaining that sexuality can change over time. “Some people switch between just two sexualities; others might find themselves identifying with several. Personally, I alternate between being attracted to men and women,” they noted.

While the term isn’t brand new, awareness of abrosexuality is on the rise. Notably, Michelle Visage, a judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race, shared the abrosexual pride flag on her Instagram in 2021. This flag features five colors—dark green, light green, white, light pink, and dark pink—and was initially introduced on Tumblr by an unknown designer in 2013, as reported by The Standard.

As more individuals embrace and share their experiences with abrosexuality, the conversation continues to evolve, highlighting the importance of understanding and accepting diverse sexual identities.
