People are only now discovering the meaning of the ‘SSSS’ code on boarding passes

Navigating Airport Security: What the ‘SSSS’ Code on Your Boarding Pass Means

The Stress of Airport Travel

For those unfamiliar with flying, getting through the airport can feel overwhelming. Delays, long security lines, and last-minute flight changes turn what should be an exciting journey into a stressful ordeal. On top of that, your boarding pass might hold a surprise you weren’t expecting.

The Importance of Tight Security

Given today’s world, we can all agree that strict airport security is necessary. Personally, I don’t mind an extra check or a few more minutes in line if it ensures a safer flight. However, I understand why some people get frustrated when randomly selected for additional screening. If you have nothing to hide, it feels like an unnecessary inconvenience.

Check Your Boarding Pass

Next time you travel to or from the U.S., take a closer look at your boarding pass. If you see the “SSSS” code printed on it, airport security might take special interest in you. This doesn’t mean you’ve done anything wrong—just that you’ve been randomly selected for extra screening.

One Traveler’s Experience

In 2024, travel influencer Jordyn Verzera shared a TikTok video after her partner, JT Mocarski, found the ‘SSSS’ code on his ticket. She explained that he had to separate his belongings from hers, remove every item from his bag, undergo swab testing, and even power on his laptop for inspection.

What Does ‘SSSS’ Mean?

The code stands for “Secondary Security Screening Selection.” If you receive this designation, expect closer scrutiny from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). This could include detailed baggage checks, swabbing for explosives, and even electronic device inspections.

Passengers Share Their Stories

Many TikTok users shared their own ‘SSSS’ experiences in the comments. One traveler said, “TSA scanned my phone, copied my texts, app messages, and pictures. It felt weird and violating, but I guess they can enjoy my close-up pimple shots.” Another user, a veteran and 20-year federal employee, questioned why they were selected. A third person noted, “I was flagged all the time when I used to fly solo before turning 18.”
