One of the Eaton Fire Victims Identified – Sister Speaks Out

The Eaton Fire claimed the life of 66-year-old Victor Shaw, identified as one of five victims. Victor, who had mobility issues, stayed behind to defend his family’s home while his sister, Shari, evacuated. Tragically, he was later found with a garden hose in his hand. Shari recalled, “I yelled out his name, but he didn’t reply. I had to leave as the house went up in flames.” Family friend Al Tanner said Victor seemed to be protecting the home his parents had owned for 55 years.

The 10,600-acre Eaton Fire remains under investigation and is one of several devastating wildfires in Los Angeles. Other fires include the 19,978-acre Palisades Fire, which destroyed 1,000 structures, and the 771-acre Hurst Fire in Sylmar. CAL FIRE reports heightened fire risks due to dry conditions and offshore winds but notes recent rainfall has helped moderate activity.

Despite ongoing efforts, at least 10 lives have been lost, with the death toll expected to rise. Dangerous conditions, such as spot fires and downed power lines, have hindered recovery and investigations. Sheriff Robert Luna stated, “Frankly, we don’t know yet,” about the final death count. President Joe Biden has approved a federal disaster declaration for Los Angeles County.

Our condolences go out to the Shaw family and all affected by these tragic events.
