Numbness or tingling sensations in your hands

Tingling Hands? Here’s What It Means and How to Address It

Have you ever woken up with numbness or tingling in your hands? If so, you’re not alone. This pins-and-needles sensation is usually harmless and easy to address.

What Causes Tingling Hands?

Sleeping Position
Sleeping with your hands under your body can compress nerves, leading to temporary numbness. Once you adjust your position, the sensation typically fades.

Repetitive Movements
Typing, writing, or using tools repeatedly can cause nerve compression over time. This may result in carpal tunnel syndrome, where the median nerve in the wrist becomes compressed. In severe cases, untreated carpal tunnel syndrome can lead to permanent nerve damage, sometimes requiring surgery.

Nutritional Deficiencies and Dehydration

Vitamin B12 Deficiency
Vegans and vegetarians are more prone to B12 deficiency, which can cause tingling sensations. B12 is found in eggs, dairy, meat, and fortified cereals, or as supplements.

Electrolyte Imbalance
Low levels of calcium, potassium, or sodium can disrupt nerve signals, causing tingling. This often stems from dehydration, certain medications, or underlying health conditions. Staying hydrated and eating nutrient-rich foods can help maintain balance.

Underlying Medical Conditions

Diabetic Neuropathy
Long-term high blood sugar can damage peripheral nerves, leading to diabetic neuropathy. Symptoms include numbness, tingling, or burning in the hands and feet.

Nerve Compression
Herniated discs or neck spondylosis can compress nerves, causing tingling.

Other Causes
Autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis, poor circulation, non-cancerous growths like ganglion cysts, and infections can also result in numbness and tingling.

When to Seek Help

While tingling hands are often harmless, persistent numbness may signal a more serious issue. Seek medical advice if the sensation doesn’t improve.
