The entertainment world reeled on December 14 after filmmaker Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, 68, were found dead in their Brentwood home. Authorities responded to a medical emergency call at 3:38 PM and confirmed both had died from stab wounds. Law enforcement quickly classified the case as a double homicide.
Son Arrested in Connection
The couple’s son, Nick Reiner, was arrested at 9:15 PM and booked into Los Angeles County Jail at 5:04 AM on suspicion of their murders. Reports indicate he may enter an insanity plea at an upcoming court appearance. Their daughter, Romy, discovered the bodies and informed police that Nick lived with their parents, warning officers that he was “dangerous” and should be considered a suspect.
Official Cause of Death
TMZ obtained the couple’s death certificates from the Los Angeles County Public Health Department, confirming both died from “multiple sharp force injuries.” The documents describe the fatal wounds as inflicted “with knife, by another,” underscoring the violent nature of their deaths. Both Rob and Michele have since been cremated. The certificates, though expected, carry a heavy emotional weight for family, friends, and colleagues.
A Daughter’s Heartbreak
Rob’s eldest daughter, Tracy Reiner, spoke publicly about the loss. Appearing on NBC News with Chloe Melas, she said, “I came from the greatest family ever. I don’t know what to say. I’m in shock.” Tracy was adopted by Rob during his marriage to Penny Marshall and is the biological daughter of Michael Henry. She is known for her roles in A League of Their Own, Die Hard, and Apollo 13.

News of the deaths prompted an outpouring of grief from Hollywood and political figures. California Governor Gavin Newsom called Reiner a “big-hearted genius behind so many of the classic stories we love.” Longtime friends Christopher Guest and Jamie Lee Curtis issued a joint statement expressing devastation.
They said they were “numb, sad, and shocked” by the “violent, tragic deaths” of their close friends. “Our only focus and care right now is for their children and immediate families, and we will offer all support possible,” they added.
