A Mission Rooted in Service
For 13 years, Robert Francis Prevost led an Augustinian missionary campaign in La Vega. He consistently visited various communities, spreading messages of faith and hope. In recognition of his dedication, the Augustinian institution awarded him the Order of Saint Augustine—their highest honor.
A Frequent Visitor to the Dominican Republic
Monsignor Jesús Castro Marte, bishop of the Diocese of Our Lady of Altagracia in Higüey, confirmed that Prevost regularly visited the country while serving as superior. According to the bishop, Prevost often walked through towns such as Palmarito, Barranca, Jamo, and Licey. In each community, he demonstrated his deep commitment to service and the Christian faith.
A Humble and Thoughtful Leader
Bishop Castro Marte described Prevost as open to dialogue and possessing a “postmodern way of thinking.” He also noted Prevost’s humility, simplicity, and exceptional listening skills.

A Memorable Visit in 2004
One of Prevost’s most impactful visits occurred in 2004, when he traveled to Colegio Agustiniano de La Vega. The community welcomed him with enthusiasm and warmth. During this visit, he received the Order of Saint Augustine—the highest distinction given by the school and its religious community in the Dominican Republic.
A Lasting Impact
At the time, Prevost served as Prior General of the worldwide Order of Saint Augustine. His approachability and warmth earned him widespread admiration. That day, he spent time with students, teachers, and religious leaders. His visit left a deep impression on all who met him.
Remembered with Respect
Prevost’s leadership style—marked by humility and personal example—remains memorable. Many saw in him not just a spiritual guide, but a kind and committed individual. His election as pope brings those memories back to life.
Legacy in La Vega
Today, the communities he served in La Vega still cherish his visits. His message of faith and service continues to inspire those who knew him during his missionary years.
