One Iconic Accessory That Never Changes
Morgan Freeman has taken on countless roles over the years, but one thing has stayed constant — his gold earrings. Whether he’s playing God in Bruce Almighty or Ellis in The Shawshank Redemption, Freeman always shows up with his signature hoops.
A Style Statement Through the Decades
While his characters may change, his gold earrings do not. At awards shows and public events, fans have noticed the 87-year-old actor never appears without them. Even when he recently wore a single black glove at appearances, the earrings remained.
From Dancer to Hollywood Icon
Freeman began his career as a dancer before joining a musical theater group in San Francisco. He landed a small role in Sidney Lumet’s The Pawnbroker in 1965 and later made his Broadway debut in 1968.
His first television appearance came in 1971, the same year he received his first credited film role. His breakout performance didn’t arrive until 1987, when he starred in Street Smart — at nearly 50 years old.
A Legendary Career
Since then, Freeman has starred in a range of classics, including The Dark Knight Rises and 2024’s Gunner on Amazon Prime. He’s earned major accolades, from an Academy Award to two Golden Globes. Despite his $250 million net worth, according to Celebrity Net Worth, he still wears the same gold hoops.
Why the Earrings?
So, why does he always wear them? Freeman answered this in an Instagram post:
“These earrings. I get asked all the time about them. The truth is, these are worth just enough for someone to buy me a coffin if I die in a strange place. That’s why sailors used to wear them and that’s why I do.”
A Nod to Hollywood and History
Freeman also drew inspiration from Burt Lancaster in The Crimson Pirate, a 1952 film set in the Caribbean. He admired Lancaster’s golden earrings and thought the look was “sexy.”
He explained to Fox News in 2016:
“Then I learned that sailors wore gold earrings to pay for funerals if they died in foreign lands. I’m a sailor, so that nailed it.”
