Divorce rumors about Barack and Michelle Obama have been circulating for some time. On Wednesday, Michelle seized the chance to confront these rumors while highlighting the unrealistic societal expectations placed on women.

Michelle appeared on Sophia Bush’s Work in Progress podcast. About nine minutes in, she shared a personal reflection on her life now that her daughters, Malia (26) and Sasha (23), have moved out.

Becoming an “empty nester,” Michelle said, has been liberating:
“[Life] is whatever I want, Sophia. It’s whatever I want.”
She added, “It’s the first time in my life all of my choices are for me.”
For years, Michelle balanced motherhood, public life, and supporting her husband’s career, often putting others’ needs before her own.

A New Chapter: Reclaiming Control
Now that her family is grown, Michelle is embracing her independence. However, she acknowledged that asserting her own needs has been challenging, especially as a woman.

“When I say ‘no,’ people usually understand,” she said, but quickly shifted tone to address public backlash. “We as women… we struggle with disappointing others. So much so, that this year, people couldn’t fathom I was making a choice for myself, and they assumed my husband and I were divorcing.”

Rumors Fuel Speculation
The divorce rumors intensified after Michelle’s absence from the funeral of Jimmy Carter and Donald Trump’s inauguration, where Barack attended both. While Michelle didn’t specify what sparked the rumors, her absence fueled speculation.

In January, Vanity Fair tied the rumors to an In Touch Weekly story that actress Jennifer Aniston was allegedly pursuing Barack. Aniston quickly denied this claim, stating, “I’ve met [Barack] once. I know Michelle more than him.”
