Man Stunned After Spotting His Own Photo on Missing Children Website

Note: we are republishing this story which originally made the news in April 2012.

A Chance Click Changes Everything

Steve Carter, a 35-year-old software salesman from Philadelphia, made a shocking discovery that altered his life forever. One day, while browsing a missing children’s website, he saw something unimaginable—his own face.

A Search for Identity

Adopted at age four from a Honolulu orphanage, Carter had long carried questions about his past. However, it wasn’t until he heard the story of Carlina White—a woman who found her baby photo online and learned she had been kidnapped—that he felt compelled to act.

Inspired, Carter visited MissingKids.com, run by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. There, he spotted an age-progressed photo. It looked eerily familiar. The baby in the image was unmistakably him.

A Call That Sparked Answers

Without hesitation, Carter contacted the Honolulu Police Department. What followed was a yearlong investigation into his true identity. In February 2011, DNA testing confirmed what he suspected—his real name was Marx Panama Moriarty Barnes.

A Long-Lost Past

Carter’s biological father, Mark Barnes, had reported him missing over 30 years earlier. His mother, Charlotte Moriarty, had taken him for a walk and never returned. Somehow, Carter ended up in an orphanage, but the events that led there remain unclear.

Uncovering the Mystery

Despite the decades that had passed, Carter finally pieced together the puzzle of his life. His journey, filled with twists and emotional revelations, shows that even long-buried truths can surface.

Hope for Others

Robert Lowery, executive director of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, praised Carter’s courage. He encouraged others with doubts about their origins to search the database. “This is a happy ending to a story that usually isn’t,” Lowery said.

A Message That Endures

Steve Carter’s discovery didn’t just reunite a family—it offered hope. His story proves that no matter how much time has passed, answers can still be found.
