Man moved to tears after discovering heartfelt message on a hidden woodland grave

Discovering a Hidden Memorial

During a leisurely walk through Kiroli Park in West Monroe, Louisiana, Zach Medlin uncovered a hidden treasure that had gone unnoticed for years. Among fallen leaves and pine needles, a small, square stone caught his eye.

While his one-eyed Staffordshire terrier, Serena, chased ducks by the nearby lake, Medlin’s curiosity drew him to the stone. Clearing away pine straw, he revealed the inscription.

Remembering Buddie

The stone marked the grave of Buddie, who lived from 1928 to 1941, with the words: “Born a dog, died a gentleman.” Medlin couldn’t help but wonder why this beloved dog was laid to rest in a 160-acre public park.

“It’s heartwarming to think Buddie comforted his family during the Great Depression,” Medlin shared. “Every dog deserves a grave marker.”

Local Legends and Lore

Rumor has it that Kiroli Park once served as a Boy Scout camp, and Buddie was their loyal mascot. According to the tale, Buddie’s barks saved a drowning boy, alerting other Scouts to rescue him.

However, local researcher Lora Peppers uncovered a different story. A 1993 note on Findagrave.com, credited to Mrs. Dee Strickland, says Buddie actually belonged to Mr. and Mrs. Albert H. Jones of Monroe. Mr. Jones, who often brought Buddie to Kiroli Park, chose to bury him there.
