Love at First Sight
When Charles Kelley walked into the group dinner, he didn’t know his life was about to change. His bandmate Hillary Scott had quietly invited Cassie McConnell Kelley—whose sister was dating the band’s keyboard player—to join the evening.
Amid the 15–20 people, Charles and Cassie locked eyes all night. “She’s the prettiest girl that had ever paid me any attention,” he remembered.
The very next day, Charles called Cassie. He said: “Can I take you on an official date? I’d love to take you out to dinner.” And just like that—they began their journey together.

From Date to ‘I Do’
In December 2008, Charles proposed to Cassie during the Christmas holiday.
They married in two ceremonies. First, a civil wedding in Nashville in June 2009, and then a destination celebration in the Bahamas on July 6, 2009.
Trials Before Triumph
As Charles’s band, Lady A, surged into fame, the couple encountered real‑life challenges. They struggled to conceive a child for several years. A doctor told them they had only about a 1 % chance to conceive naturally.
They even planned to begin IVF—until, at the last moment, Cassie became pregnant naturally.
On February 11, 2016, their son Ward Charles Kelley was born.

Growing Stronger Together
Today, their relationship remains strong. Charles credits Cassie for being the reason he committed to sobriety—calling her his partner in both marriage and healing.
They have used their journey—through love, struggle and triumph—as inspiration. Their story continues to resonate because it’s real.
