JUST IN – California Gov. Gavin Newsom declares state of emergency over H5N1 bird flu

JUST IN –

California Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency in response to the H5N1 bird flu outbreak, which has severely impacted the state’s dairy industry. Since its U.S. detection in March 2024, the virus has affected over 866 herds across 16 states, with California bearing the brunt. Over 60 human infections, mostly mild, have been reported, but a severe case in Louisiana has raised concerns. Authorities are implementing protective measures, including farmworker vaccinations and increased raw milk testing. While public risk remains low, officials warn of potential viral mutations and continue monitoring to prevent further escalation.
