Johnny Depp Expresses Gratitude to His Mother, Betty Sue, Despite a Difficult Childhood — Here’s His Reason

Johnny Depp Opens Up About His Complicated Bond With His Late Mother

In a raw and revealing interview with The Telegraph in July 2025, actor Johnny Depp reflected on his complex relationship with his late mother, Betty Sue Palmer. He discussed how their difficult family dynamic shaped his childhood, his parenting style, and even his career.

Who Was Betty Sue Palmer?

Betty Sue was born in 1935 in eastern Kentucky. She worked tirelessly as a waitress, often taking on double shifts to care for her four children. After a long illness, she passed away on May 20, 2016, at age 81.

Johnny described his mother as someone who came from humble beginnings. When his father, a civil engineer, became mostly absent, Betty Sue took on the role of raising the children alone. The family moved more than 40 times before settling in Florida.

A Bond Marked by Love and Trauma

Despite their troubled history, Johnny remained connected to his mother. He brought her to the 2004 Academy Awards, where he received his first Oscar nomination.

However, their relationship had dark moments. During testimony in his defamation case against ex-wife Amber Heard, Johnny described his mother as “vi*lent” and “cruel.” He recalled her erratic behavior and frequent physical abuse.

“She had the ability to be as cruel as anyone can be,” he said. “She could become quite violent.”

He described incidents where she struck him with ashtrays, high-heeled shoes, or whatever she could grab. Yet his feelings about her remained complicated.

“Betty Sue, I worshiped her,” he once admitted.

At her funeral, Johnny said, “My mom was maybe the meanest human being I have ever met in my life.” In a Rolling Stone interview, he called their home a “ghost house” — a place of silence and emotional isolation. That environment, he said, taught him to try to “fix” people.

Why He Still Thanked Her

In his recent interview, Johnny revealed why he remains grateful to his mother — despite her cruelty. Her harsh parenting taught him exactly what not to do as a father.

“I thank her for that. She taught me how not to raise kids. Just do the exact opposite of what she did,” he explained.

This approach helped him raise his two children, Lily-Rose and Jack, with former partner Vanessa Paradis. He believes that surviving her ab*se built his resilience and gave him a unique perspective on parenting.

He also remembered being b*llied at age six. When he told his mother, she gave him blunt, lasting advice:

“Alright, here’s the deal. Next time anybody puts their hands on you, pick up a brick and lay them out.”

That fierce protectiveness, Johnny said, is something he’s carried into his own fatherhood.

His First Big Gift to Her

When Johnny received his first major paycheck in 1995, he didn’t spend it on himself. Instead, he bought his mother a 43-acre horse farm near Lexington, Kentucky — a $1 million gift that allowed her to return to her roots.

Only afterward did he indulge in something for himself: a 1940 Harley-Davidson motorcycle, which he still owns. For Johnny, the farm symbolized how far they’d both come.

Even with a past full of pain, Johnny Depp has chosen to find meaning, gratitude, and lessons in the legacy his mother left behind.
