Biden Explains His Exit from the 2024 Race
Former U.S. President Joe Biden, who had long vowed to seek re-election, finally revealed why he chose to step aside.
In his first sit-down interview since withdrawing, Biden opened up to BBC’s Nick Robinson about passing the torch to a new generation.
Reflecting on the Decision
Biden spoke about the events leading to his July 21, 2024, decision. Though he once insisted on staying in the race, he ultimately chose to finish his term without running again. At the same time, he endorsed former Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee.
When Robinson asked if he should have stepped down sooner, Biden dismissed the idea. “I don’t think it would have mattered,” he said. “I don’t know how that would have made much difference.”
Momentum Made It Hard to Quit
Biden explained why it was tough to walk away. “I meant what I said when I started — preparing to hand this to the next generation,” he noted. “But things moved quickly, and it became a hard decision.”
Still, he stood by the timing. When asked if he had regrets, Biden firmly replied, “I think it was the right decision.” Despite the Republican win in 2024, he stressed his commitment to party unity and generational change.
Stepping Back into the Spotlight
Beyond the interview, Biden made headlines on April 15, 2025, with his first major public speech since leaving office. He addressed a bipartisan conference in Chicago hosted by the Advocates, Counselors, and Representatives for the Disabled (ACRD).
Criticizing the Current Administration
At the Sofitel Chicago Magnificent Mile, Biden sharply criticized the administration’s handling of Social Security. “Fewer than 100 days, and they’ve done so much damage — it’s breathtaking,” he said. He accused them of slashing staff and undermining the system. “They’ve taken a hatchet to Social Security, pushing 7,000 employees out the door,” Biden claimed.
He also pointed out access issues. “People can’t sign on to their accounts,” he said, frustrated. He didn’t hold back, alleging bad intentions. “They want to wreck it so they can rob it. Why? To give tax cuts to billionaires and big corporations.”

Making a Powerful Appearance
Biden wore a deep blue suit, white shirt, and blue tie, standing confidently before American flags and the ACRD logo. Photos captured him energized, using hand gestures and speaking with focus.
Public Reacts to His Look
Social media buzzed after the event. Many users on X and Instagram admired his refreshed appearance. Comments poured in:
-
“Biden looks younger.”
-
“He looks healthy and stress-free.”
-
“I miss you, Joe Biden. You look wonderful.”
Some speculated, “He’s had some work done.” Others simply said, “We are scared over here” and “President Biden is so amazing.”
Sharing Personal Stories
Biden didn’t just talk policy. He shared childhood memories shaped by racial injustice. He recalled a moment in fourth grade when he saw a bus of Black children passing Claymont High School. Curious, he asked his mother why they weren’t in his school. Her answer opened his eyes to segregation. “That sparked my outrage,” Biden admitted.
Speaking to young attendees, he stressed how early lessons of fairness shape us.
Highlighting Dignity and Fairness
Biden shifted from memory to principle, recalling his father’s words: “A job’s a lot more than a paycheck. It’s about your dignity.” Though he never mentioned Donald Trump, Biden made his point clear — dignity, fairness, and inclusion should guide lawmakers.
Calling Out Congress
Biden’s tone sharpened when criticizing Congress. “Every five years, Congress steps up,” he said. “Can you imagine this Congress stepping up?” He highlighted how raising the retirement age might not affect desk workers but would hurt those doing manual labor or living with disabilities.
Sparking Online Debate
The speech sparked reactions beyond the room. Donald Trump reposted a clip from Biden’s remarks on Truth Social — no caption, just the video. Meanwhile, public comments poured in:
-
“WOW.”
-
“Finally, a speech with meaningful content.”
-
“Glad you are back. Keep speaking out.”
Others praised his clarity: “He is speaking coherently and seriously.” Some added personal notes: “You look good, Mr. President. Hope you are doing well.”
