Leavitt’s Remarks Stir Controversy
Earlier that day, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt took a jab at Biden. Her remarks sparked immediate backlash.
“I was shocked he was speaking at night. I thought his bedtime was much earlier,” she said.
She then added, “President Trump remains fully committed to protecting Social Security benefits.”
Many saw her comments as ageist. On Facebook, one person responded, “Very rude. He deserves at least some respect!”
Another wrote, “I usually like her bluntness, but this was immature and disrespectful.”

Biden’s criticism came amid recent controversial changes to the Social Security Administration under President Trump.
Trump’s administration launched workforce cuts, aiming to lay off 7,000 SSA employees. It also introduced stricter identity checks and a data-sharing deal with the Department of Government Efficiency, led by Elon Musk.
Musk, who once called Social Security “the biggest Ponzi scheme of all time,” defended the reforms. However, critics pushed back. A lawsuit followed after the SSA allowed Musk’s team access to sensitive Social Security data.
Public Concerns Grow
Meanwhile, SSA beneficiaries have reported longer wait times and incorrect notices. The agency blamed system errors, but anxiety remains—especially among low-income and disabled recipients.
Attorney Jason Turkish, representing 32,000 disability clients, said, “There’s always been a belief that Social Security is untouchable. That belief is fading.”
Biden’s Farewell Message Revisited
Biden’s speech came three months after his January 15 farewell address. At that time, he spoke directly to the nation.
“After 50 years of public service, I still believe in the idea of America,” he said.
He encouraged Americans to defend democracy:
“Now it’s your turn to stand guard. Keep the faith. God bless you all.”
As he concluded, Biden offered hope:
“It will take time to see the full impact of what we’ve done. But the seeds are planted—they’ll grow and bloom for decades.”
