Jimmy the Bear — A Friendly Giant With a Big Heart

Hidden behind the trees of Middletown, New York, Jimmy’s days unfold in deliberate stillness, far from the noise of spectacle and profit. Born in captivity, he never learned how to hunt, forage, or fear humans the way a wild bear should. That loss, irreversible and unfair, might have doomed him to a life of display. Instead, Marty and Debbie Kowalczik rewrote his fate with patience, boundaries, and respect.

They built their lives around animals like Jimmy, choosing privacy over ticket sales and welfare over entertainment. On their 100-acre sanctuary, there are no staged photo ops or choreographed tricks, only space, enrichment, and rituals of care that repeat like a promise. Jimmy shares this refuge with other rescued bears, each one spared a quieter kind of suffering. His story is no fairy tale, but a quiet argument: that true compassion asks nothing in return, and still shows up every day.
