Jimmy Kimmel’s Talk Show Halted
Jimmy Kimmel is off the air, at least for now. On Wednesday, ABC confirmed that Jimmy Kimmel Live! will be preempted “for the foreseeable future,” starting with that night’s episode.
The network’s decision sparked criticism from many, but Donald Trump, currently on a state visit in the UK, praised the move, calling Kimmel a “loser.”
Preempted Across ABC Stations
Nexstar Media Group and its ABC-affiliated stations announced the preemption, citing Kimmel’s recent comments on the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.
“Nexstar strongly objects to recent comments made by Mr. Kimmel concerning the killing of Charlie Kirk and will replace the show with other programming in its ABC-affiliated markets,” the company said.
The host made the controversial remarks on Monday night:
“We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.”
He also criticized the lowering of flags in Kirk’s honor and mocked President Trump’s reaction:
“This is not how an adult grieves the murder of someone he calls a friend. This is how a four-year-old mourns a goldfish,” Kimmel said.
FCC Threatens Action
The comments drew heavy backlash. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr condemned Kimmel and threatened to revoke licenses of ABC affiliates that continued airing the show.
“Licensed broadcasters are running the possibility of fines or license revocations from the FCC if we continue to run content with a pattern of news distortion,” Carr said.
Trump Weighs In
Trump has a long history of criticizing late-night hosts. From the UK, he weighed in on the cancellation via Truth Social:
“Great News for America: The ratings challenged Jimmy Kimmel Show is CANCELLED. Congratulations to ABC for finally having the courage to do what had to be done. Kimmel has ZERO talent, and worse ratings than even Colbert, if that’s possible. That leaves Jimmy and Seth [Myers], two total losers, on Fake News NBC. Their ratings are also horrible. Do it NBC!!!”
Kimmel’s Response Cut Short
According to Hollywood Reporter, Kimmel was preparing to address the backlash on Wednesday night’s episode. The show’s cancellation prevented him from speaking. Reports say he intended to clarify his remarks, which were allegedly taken out of context, but he did not plan to apologize.
