Jennifer Lopez’s dress stuns (and divides) at the 2026 Golden Globes

Jennifer Lopez turned heads on the red carpet at the 83rd Annual Golden Globes on January 11, 2026.

But not everyone was sure what to make of her look.

“Looks like fish in the sea”

This year’s Golden Globes had it all — Jennifer Lawrence’s daring “naked dress,” Sean Penn’s smoking habit, Leonardo DiCaprio’s hand gestures and playful expressions… and, of course, Jennifer Lopez’s unforgettable gown.

The pop icon and actress arrived at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills wearing a jaw-dropping gown by Jean-Louis Scherrer for Stephane Rolland. This marked her first appearance at the awards show since her split from ex-husband Ben Affleck, and she certainly didn’t go unnoticed.

The dress shimmered with brown lace and glitter, hugging her figure before flaring into a dramatic tulle mermaid hem that skimmed the floor.

Her hair was styled in a sleek French twist with a soft side bang, and her bronzed makeup gave her a sharply contoured glow that left some fans scratching their heads. Accessories included morganite and diamond earrings, a diamond ring, and a coordinating brown clutch.

Unexpected color choice

The reactions online were immediate, and as always, mixed.

“Looks like fish in the sea,” one Instagram user joked.

Another commented, “The dress is pretty till you get to the bottom part, not sure why all that lace sticking out, like a flared skirt, or slip.”

Others jumped to Lopez’s defense, praising the bold statement.

“She may be a lot of things, but hands down — she KILLS IT EVERY TIME @FASHION! Every SINGLE TIME!!!” one fan said. Another wrote, “Passage please, the mermaid queen has arrived! 🧜🤎.”

“Better looking than that shower curtain that other girl put on,” wrote another fan, likely referencing Jennifer Lawrence’s outfit.

Some celebrated the unexpected color choice: “Love the dress. Her hair looks beautiful. It’s rare to see her in that color, she should wear it more often.”

18K gold earrings

But her makeup, especially the heavy bronzer, became a hot topic.

“What is all of that bronzer on her forehead? 👀🧐” one fan asked, while another bluntly added, “So much bronzer. Aye.” One summed it up perfectly: “The contouring under her jaw and on her cheeks is crazy.”

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight at The Beverly Hilton about her look, Lopez shared, “I got it from LILY et Cie,” and added, “It’s my own.” She went on to explain, “It’s a vintage gown… From early 2000s.”

Her earrings were from Sabyasachi Jewels. According to the brand’s Instagram, J.Lo’s statement earrings were “crafted in 18K gold with morganite and brilliant cut EF VVS VS diamonds.” They were complemented by “a statement ring crafted in 18K gold with tourmaline and brilliant cut EF VVS VS diamonds.”

More attention-grabbing outfits

At 56, JLo is no stranger to bold, attention-grabbing outfits.

Just a month earlier, she caused a stir at a school play for her daughter Emme Muñiz, sharing the event with Ben Affleck’s daughter Fin.

Grainy photos showed Ben in a blue suit with his son, Sam, and Jennifer Garner, while Lopez chatted briefly with young Sam near the school entrance.

The two stars kept their distance all night, but social media’s focus wasn’t the interaction —it was JLo’s daring outfit.

She wore a beige jacket left open at the front, showing a deep neckline and a peek of black lace underneath.

Just like at the Golden Globes, fans were split.

“Like why are you wearing an open shirt to a child’s play,” one user asked. Another wrote, “JLo’s desperate outfit to a school play…”

A commenter questioned, “Why would JL wear an open/low cut jacket showing her black bra, to a kids play [sic]???” Another added, “JLo wearing lingerie under her jacket? How desperate 🤦‍♀️.”

But some took a softer view. “JLo looks good,” one fan said. Others focused on the family moment: “Samuel loves JLo, it speaks volume 👏.” And a few went even gentler: “What a lovely family moment to witness!”

Love her or question her choices, Jennifer Lopez knows how to make a statement—both on the red carpet and at a school play.
