JD Vance had surgery prior to taking the oath as vice president

JD Vance’s Remarkable Rise

JD Vance’s path to the White House is nothing short of astounding. Born in Middletown, Ohio, he first grabbed attention in 2016 with his bestselling memoir, Hillbilly Elegy. After serving in the military and working briefly as a venture capitalist, Vance now serves as Vice President of the United States.

Yet, despite his success, 2025 began with personal health challenges. Just weeks before the inauguration, Vance underwent a minor, planned surgery.

A Turbulent Childhood

Vance’s early life was far from easy. Raised in a troubled home alongside his half-sister Lindsay, he watched his mother struggle with addiction and violent outbursts. One terrifying moment, which he later described in interviews and his memoir, involved his mother threatening to crash their car with both children inside.

Ultimately, after legal action, Vance and his sister found stability with their grandparents.

Finding Direction

After Lindsay left home to start her own family, Vance floundered. He drifted toward the wrong crowd and experimented with drugs. But his no-nonsense grandmother stepped in, giving him a hard ultimatum that changed his path.

Determined, Vance graduated high school in 2003 and enlisted in the Marine Corps. Serving as a combat correspondent in Iraq, he honed his skills under pressure, learning resilience and leadership.

Signs of a Future Politician

Even back then, colleagues saw political potential in him. JD excelled in media relations roles usually reserved for senior officers, impressing superiors and peers alike with his confidence and eloquence.

A fellow Marine once recalled how Vance, when put on the spot by a journalist, gave a spontaneous, Churchill-like response. It was clear he was destined for bigger stages.

Academic and Business Success

Using the GI Bill, Vance earned a political science degree from Ohio State, then graduated from Yale Law School. His memoir, Hillbilly Elegy, became a major success and was later adapted into a Netflix film.

He soon entered venture capital, working with AOL co-founder Steve Case and later founding his own firm. But politics kept calling.

Political Breakthrough

Though he passed on a 2018 Senate run for family reasons, Vance jumped into the race when Ohio Senator Rob Portman retired. Backed by Donald Trump, Vance won the Republican primary in 2022 and defeated Tim Ryan in the general election.

Ironically, Vance had once called Trump a “moral disaster.” But over time, they found common ground, leading to Trump selecting him as running mate.

Facing New Challenges

Now, as Vice President, Vance finds himself under global scrutiny. His recent criticism of Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy sparked backlash. Still, only time will tell what the next four years will bring.

Despite the rocky start — including January’s surgery — JD Vance continues his journey, determined to leave his mark on American politics.
