Another Vatican Blunder
JD Vance is once again facing backlash—this time for a gesture many say broke Vatican protocol during a meeting with the newly elected Pope Leo XIV.
The U.S. Vice President, already criticized last month for ignoring rules on holy grounds, appears to have stirred controversy again. During Sunday’s (May 18) meeting, Vance gently patted the pope on the elbow—an act some described as overly familiar and inappropriate.
Not the First Time
Last month, Vance angered Catholic followers by allegedly violating protocol during a visit to the Sistine Chapel. He posted photos from inside the sacred space, where cameras and electronics are strictly banned. Critics accused him of showing deep disrespect, especially since Pope Francis passed away just hours after their meeting.
A Pope with Strong Opinions
The latest incident took place shortly after Pope Leo XIV—formerly a Chicago native—was named head of the Roman Catholic Church on May 8. As the first American to hold the position, Pope Leo has drawn attention not just for his nationality, but also for his political views.
Old tweets have resurfaced, revealing his vocal criticism of Republican policies, particularly those of Donald Trump. He has also called out JD Vance directly for misinterpreting Christian values.
A Frosty Meeting Turns Too Casual
Despite expectations of a tense encounter, Vance appeared surprisingly relaxed when meeting Pope Leo. After a formal handshake and brief conversation, he reached out and lightly touched the pope’s elbow. Many interpreted the move as a breach of etiquette.
Critics on social media didn’t hold back. One user compared the moment to “patting a puppy’s head.” Another said, “Vance acted like he was greeting an old drinking buddy.”
Vatican Etiquette: What Went Wrong
According to MetroWest, visitors must follow strict customs when meeting the pope—similar to protocols observed when meeting royalty. Key rules include:
-
Dress conservatively (suits for men; modest dresses or skirts for women)
-
Stand quietly and wait to be introduced
-
Address the pope as “Your Holiness”
-
Avoid physical contact unless invited
By touching the pope without invitation, Vance violated one of the most basic rules.
Vance Responds to the Criticism
Speaking to The Independent, Vance said he avoids “playing the politicization of the Pope game.” On a recent radio show, he added:
“I’m sure [Pope Leo] will say things I love, and things I disagree with. But I’ll continue to pray for him and the Church despite it all.”
Vance’s attempt to appear friendly may have crossed a line. And given his recent missteps in Vatican City, critics say he still has a lot to learn about respecting tradition—especially when under the global spotlight.
