Tragic Loss in the Browne Family
Ethan Browne, son of legendary singer-songwriter Jackson Browne, has died. He was found unresponsive at his home on the morning of November 25, 2025. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has confirmed the cause: a lethal mix of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and lidocaine. The death was ruled accidental.
Jackson Browne shared the heartbreaking news on Facebook, writing, “It is with deep sorrow that we share that on the morning of November 25, 2025, Ethan Browne… was found unresponsive in his home and has passed away. We ask for privacy and respect for the family during this difficult time.”
Ethan, 52, was the only son of Jackson and the late actress Phyllis Major, who tragically died by suicide in 1976 when Ethan was just a toddler.
A Life Born Into Music History
From birth, Ethan was part of rock history. In 1974, he appeared with Jackson on the cover of Rolling Stone. Jackson, then 25, was photographed nuzzling his newborn son—a tender moment capturing early parenthood.
Even as a baby, Ethan’s life intertwined with music, art, and fame. As he grew, he pursued creative passions of his own. He acted, modeled, and followed his father into the world of music. In 2004, he appeared in Raising Helen alongside Kate Hudson and modeled for designer Isaac Mizrahi.
Childhood Marked by Loss and Creativity
Ethan’s early life carried the weight of tragedy. His mother’s suicide left Jackson a grieving young father. Despite this, Ethan grew into a creative, resilient adult. He channeled his energy into music, acting, and fashion, often remaining close to the spotlight but never fully in it.
Jackson often reflected on the impact of his own losses on his music. His 1976 album The Pretender drew from the pain of his personal life. Yet, Jackson also expressed pride in Ethan, describing him as a devoted father and loving son.

The revelation has amplified grief across social media. Fans flooded Jackson’s accounts with condolences and memories of Ethan, many recalling seeing him in childhood photos with his father.
Life in the Public Eye
Although Ethan often stayed out of the spotlight, his life was threaded with public moments. From Rolling Stone covers to film premieres and fashion campaigns, he moved through worlds shaped by creativity, fame, and legacy. Yet he remained deeply connected to his family, reflecting Jackson’s love and influence.
