Officer López’s heart raced with urgency and compassion as he stepped out of his patrol car. He noticed the curtains shift slightly. Tiny eyes peeked out, then vanished. He knocked gently on the door, his mind filled with possibilities.

“Liliana, can you tell me about your tummy? Does it hurt all the time?” he asked gently, keeping her calm.

She nodded, hands cradling her swollen abdomen. “It started after Dad’s friend came over. They said it would make me strong like them.”

Officer López’s heart sank. He sensed a disturbing pattern. “Can you show me what they gave you, Liliana?”

She led him to the kitchen, pointing to a small bottle on the counter. The label revealed a potent steroid—illegal and dangerous, especially for a child.
