Kamala Harris Criticizes Billionaire Influence Amid Protests
Former Vice President Kamala Harris has voiced strong criticism amid nationwide protests against President Donald Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. These protests come after Harris’s defeat in the 2024 Presidential Election.
Harris’s 2024 Election Loss
In November, Harris, 60, conceded to Trump, 78, after failing to secure enough votes. Despite her loss, she has remained relatively quiet, only speaking out recently at a summit in California about the Trump administration’s policies.
Harris’s Statement on Protests
This week, as protests against Trump and Musk, who leads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), spread across the nation, Harris took aim at the “unelected billionaires” influencing government decisions. On April 5, she posted on Twitter:
“Today, Americans in every state are standing up against the administration as it pushes Project 2025. Thank you for using your voices to protect Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, education, clean air, water, and your right to make decisions about your own body.”
She emphasized: “The voices of working people will always be louder than the unelected billionaires.”
Nationwide Protests Against the Administration
April 5 saw thousands protesting Trump in all 50 states, with major rallies in New York, Washington D.C., and Boston. Protestors highlighted various issues, including recent layoffs at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), where 10,000 workers lost their jobs. They also condemned immigration raids and Musk’s influence on federal policies, including cuts to DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) programs and climate change funding.
The Hands Off! Protests
The ‘Hands Off!’ protests gained traction, with campaigners targeting Trump’s economic policies. Many voiced opposition to Trump’s new tariffs, which impose a 10% baseline levy on imported goods, as well as higher duties on countries like Thailand and Vietnam, effective April 9.
Harris’s Support for the Rallies
Harris showed support for the ‘Hands Off!’ protests, which continue to challenge Trump’s policies. Florida Congressman Maxwell Frost echoed her sentiments, denouncing the “billionaire takeover of our government.” He urged, “When you steal from the people, expect them to rise up—in the streets and at the ballot box.”
Barack Obama’s Remarks
Earlier this week, former President Barack Obama criticized Trump’s recent moves. During an interview, Obama remarked that Trump’s policies wouldn’t benefit America and expressed disbelief that the same parties silent now would have tolerated such behavior from him or his predecessors.
Harris’s statements and the ongoing protests highlight the growing frustration with the administration’s actions and the influence of billionaires on U.S. policy.
