I’m Saying No to Christmas Hosting Because of My MIL’s Actions During Thanksgiving.

Holidays: A Time for Togetherness and Unexpected Challenges

Holidays bring families together to create cherished memories, but even the best plans can unravel. Small, thoughtless actions can lead to frustration and disappointment, as one reader discovered when her Thanksgiving turned into a dilemma.

Preparing the Feast

My husband and I hosted Thanksgiving for our families, with my mother helping me prepare three turkeys and a full festive meal. My mother-in-law contributed only a tray of cookies.

The evening was delightful, filled with good food and warm company. As the night ended, I noticed the food on the table was gone. Assuming my MIL had handled the cleanup, I went to bed without worry, especially since she hadn’t contributed much to the meal.

A Shocking Discovery

The next morning, I opened the fridge and froze in shock. Inside were only a bag of dressing and a few cookies—nothing else! Hoping it was a mistake, I checked the garage fridge, but it was empty too.

Stunned, I sat down, trying to process how all the food had vanished. When my husband walked in, I asked if he had donated the leftovers. He said no but mentioned seeing his mom carrying out several foil-wrapped containers.

A Line Crossed

I love preparing meals for everyone to enjoy and don’t mind guests taking leftovers. However, clearing out the fridge entirely felt disrespectful.

Now, I don’t want to host Christmas because of my MIL’s baffling behavior. To make it worse, my husband is upset with me for refusing to host rather than addressing his mother’s actions. I’m left feeling frustrated and disappointed.
