Illinois Gov. Pritzker Warns Trump Against Coming to Chicago

Pritzker’s warning came as reports surfaced that the Pentagon has been quietly preparing for a possible National Guard deployment to Chicago, despite no formal request from city or state officials. Standing alongside Senator Tammy Duckworth and Mayor Brandon Johnson, he argued that federal troops would not be arriving as partners in public safety, but as instruments of political theater. Chicago’s own data shows violent crime down roughly 22% from 2024, undermining Trump’s claim that the city is spiraling out of control.

The governor’s message went beyond Illinois. He urged Republican governors to refuse to lend their Guard units to what he framed as an abuse of power aimed at “a blue city in a blue state.” The White House countered that Democrats care more about TV hits than protecting residents. Between the statistics, the speeches, and the threats, one question now hangs over Chicago: is this about crime, or control?
