Routine Patrol Turns Unexpected
It was just another day on duty. My partner and I patrolled a stretch of highway notorious for collisions. Straight roads often tempt drivers to push the pedal too far. Everything felt routine—almost too calm.
Then a silver sedan zoomed past us like we weren’t even there. Radar confirmed it: 150 km/h. Bright daylight. Empty road. Speeding? Definitely. Justifiable? Not at all.
The Stop
I checked the plates. Clean record. Properly registered. No flags. I hit the lights and siren. The car slowed briefly, then sped up again.
“Driver, stop at once! You have violated traffic rules and will deal with the consequences,” I commanded over the loudspeaker.
After several hundred meters, the car finally rolled to the shoulder. I approached the driver’s side.
A Nervous Driver
Behind the wheel sat a young woman, around thirty. Her face was pale. Her eyes, full of dread.
“Ma’am, do you realize the speed limit on this highway section?” I asked.
“Yes… yes, I know…” she stammered.
“May I see your license and registration?” I added, leaning closer.
A Life-Changing Discovery
That’s when I noticed something unusual beneath her feet. Liquid pooled across the car floor. But it wasn’t just spilled water. Her labor had started.
“Ma’am… did your water just break?” I asked.
“Please… help me… I’m alone… nobody’s here,” she cried.
Without hesitation, I radioed dispatch. We were heading to the nearest hospital.
Race Against Time
We transferred her into my patrol car. I drove quickly, carefully. Her cries grew louder. Contractions intensified. I held her hand, offering reassurance while barely keeping calm myself.
We arrived just in time. Hospital staff were ready, forewarned by my call. She was rushed into the maternity ward immediately.
A Joyful Outcome
Hours later, a midwife appeared in the hallway, smiling.
“Congratulations. It’s a girl. Strong and healthy. The mother is safe too.”
Moments like these remind me why I love this job. Upholding the law is important—but compassion matters even more.
