I lifted the knife to cut the cake when my sister wrapped me in a strong embrace

A Desperate Escape

We sprinted into the kitchens, my heart pounding louder than the chaos behind us. The catering staff froze, eyes wide with shock. I couldn’t fully grasp what had just happened. Still, the urgency in Sarah’s voice left no room for doubt. Instinct took over. I ran.

The door slammed shut, muting the reception into a dull hum. The narrow corridor dimmed, heavy with the scent of spices and fresh bread. I stumbled, but Sarah’s grip never loosened. Her breathing came fast and uneven.

A Terrifying Warning

“Sarah, what’s going on?” I demanded, struggling to keep up. My voice bounced off the tiled walls. She didn’t slow down. She moved through the back corridors like she knew them by heart.

“We have to get you out,” she said, glancing back. Fear filled her eyes. “David isn’t who you think he is.”

My thoughts raced. The man I was about to marry. The man who promised love and adventure. A stranger?

“He’s dangerous,” Sarah said. “His business is a front. I found out too late.” Her voice shook. “I overheard him making plans for tonight. Something bad was going to happen to you.”

The Truth Comes Out

My stomach turned. “What kind of plans?”

She stopped beside a walk-in fridge, pressing her back against the cold metal. Her chest heaved. “I don’t know everything. But I heard talk of a deal. Leverage. He kept saying you were the key.” She looked at me. “I couldn’t let him hurt you.”

Her words hit hard. I had ignored every warning sign. David’s charm had blinded me. I dismissed my sister’s fears. I was wrong.

No Time to Look Back

“Thank you,” I whispered, emotion tightening my throat.

“Later,” Sarah cut in, grabbing my hand again. “We need to go. Now.”

We raced through the maze of corridors and burst into an alley behind the conservatory. Cool evening air hit my face. Twilight painted the sky in deep blues and purples.

Sirens wailed in the distance. The chaos lingered behind us. It was time to disappear.

A Chance to Start Over

“Where do we go?” I asked, scanning the shadows.

Sarah nodded toward a parked car. “A friend is waiting. They’ll get us somewhere safe.”

I climbed in, my heart still racing. As the engine roared and we pulled away, the weight of it all settled in. I had just walked away from my wedding. My life had changed in seconds.

But I was alive. And because of my sister, I still had a future.

As we sped into the night, I squeezed Sarah’s hand. Whatever came next, we would face it together.
