A Sudden Life-Altering Stroke
In March 2015, 37-year-old Riona Kelly from Halifax, Yorkshire, faced a nightmare. A sudden spinal stroke left her paralyzed from the waist down.
Rushed to the hospital, she confronted the harsh truth: doctors warned she might never walk again.
Abandoned at Her Lowest
To make matters worse, just five days into her hospital stay, her husband ended their marriage.
“I was miserable in my marriage, but we had built a life together and had responsibilities,” Riona recalled. Still, his sudden departure shattered her when she needed support most.
A Battle Against Despair
Faced with life in a wheelchair, Riona plunged into despair. She admits she often wished she wouldn’t wake up. But despite the darkness, something inside her refused to give up.

Small Steps Toward a Miracle
Riona poured herself into countless hours of physiotherapy. Slowly but surely, she made progress. Against all odds, she eventually stood on a parallel bar and took her first steps — an emotional victory no one expected.
Her consultant was stunned by her recovery. With relentless effort, she continued rebuilding her strength. Four months later, Riona finally returned home, though climbing the 16 steps to her door remained a huge challenge.
Love and New Beginnings
During rehab, Riona met Keith Mason, a 35-year-old personal trainer. At first, he coached her through therapy sessions, but soon, their bond deepened into love.
Now, after 11 months together, they’ve blended their families. Riona feels like she’s finally living the life she deserves.
Pushing Limits and Embracing Life
Riona didn’t stop at walking again. She completed two marathons using her wheelchair and can now walk unaided for short distances. For longer trips, she still uses the chair, but she embraces life with a newfound strength.
She credits her recovery to love, determination, and an unbreakable spirit.
Clarifying the Past
Riona’s ex-husband later clarified that he had asked for a divorce the morning before her stroke, not during her hospital stay. He said he continued supporting Riona and their children as best he could.
Since then, both have moved on and built separate new lives.
