Japan’s recent discovery of manganese nodules off Minami-Tori-shima island could significantly boost its economy. Found 5,700 meters below sea level, these nodules contain millions of metric tons of cobalt and nickel, essential for electric vehicle batteries and high-tech products. The discovery is valued at over $26 billion, with cobalt worth around $14.7 billion and nickel about $12 billion. Researchers plan to extract up to three million tons annually, starting soon, using specialized overseas mining vessels. This venture aims to create a domestic supply chain for resource mining and manufacturing, ensuring Japan’s economic security while minimizing environmental impact. The initiative could position Japan as a global leader in resource mining and technology.
