Nick Reiner Checks Into Hotel Hours Before Parents’ Deaths

Nick Reiner, the 32-year-old son of filmmaker Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, reportedly checked into the Pierside Santa Monica hotel around 4 a.m. on Sunday, December 14. This occurred just hours before the tragic deaths of his parents at their Brentwood home. According to TMZ, he booked the room for only one night, using his credit card.

Before heading to the hotel, Nick and his parents had attended a Christmas party hosted by Conan O’Brien. Sources say the family got into a heated argument during the event.

Horror Discovered in Hotel Room

Later Sunday morning, hotel staff entered Nick’s room and found shocking evidence of violence. The shower was reportedly “full of blood,” and more blood stained the bed. Staff also noted that a window had been covered with bed sheets. Witnesses described Nick as appearing “tweaked out,” though he showed no visible injuries.

Authorities have not confirmed whether the blood belonged to Nick or someone else. LAPD detectives collected evidence and interviewed hotel employees the following day.

Arrest and Charges

Nick Reiner was arrested about 20 miles from the hotel in Exposition Park, Los Angeles. He is currently held without bail at Twin Towers Correctional Facility and placed on suicide watch. He faces charges of m*rder in connection to his parents’ deaths.

Rob and Michele Reiner were found fatally stabbed around 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. Rob, 78, was a renowned filmmaker behind classics like This Is Spinal Tap, Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, and When Harry Met Sally. Michele, 68, was a talented photographer. Their daughter, Romy Reiner, discovered the bodies and identified Nick as a potentially dangerous suspect.

Family History and Substance Struggles

Nick Reiner has publicly discussed his long history of substance dependency. According to reports, he had been in rehab at least 17 times since age 15. During the Christmas party, Nick allegedly argued loudly with his parents, possibly over his refusal to enter treatment following a relapse.

Family friends noted that Rob had previously expressed concern over Nick’s deteriorating mental health. Years of addiction and homelessness shaped Nick’s past, which became the basis for the 2015 semi-autobiographical film Being Charlie, directed by Rob Reiner.

Nick previously told People about living on the streets across Maine, New Jersey, and Texas. “I spent nights on the street. It was not fun,” he said, reflecting on the “dark years” before returning to Los Angeles.

Rob and Michele Reiner married in 1989 and shared three children: Jake, Nick, and Romy. Rob also adopted Tracy during his first marriage to Penny Marshall. Rob’s films remain a cornerstone of American cinema, from comedy classics to drama hits, and Michele’s photography was widely admired.
