Here’s what it signifies if you notice a woman with a wedding ring on her pinky.

The Meaning Behind Pinky Rings

You may have noticed small rings with a single stone or a simple band adorning women’s pinky fingers. No, they aren’t a symbol of a crime boss, as portrayed in pop culture. Instead, single and happily partnered women are using them to make promises—just not the type made to a partner. These rings represent a pinky promise, the sacred vow that shouldn’t be broken. Traditionally used by children to keep secrets and by adults to seal deals, this age-old tradition has found a stylish new form. Women are now using pinky rings as symbols of self-love.

A Movement for Self-Empowerment

Fred + Far, a jewelry brand founded by two women, launched this pinky ring trend. Their goal? Celebrate personal awesomeness, regardless of relationship status. Inspired by engagement ring designs, co-founder Melody Godfred created the ring from a need to remind herself of self-care. As a busy mother of twins, she realized she often neglected herself. So, alongside co-founder Samira Far, she designed a ring as a symbol of empowerment and a personal commitment.

The Inspiration Behind the Ring

Godfred explained in an interview with Mental Scoops:
“I chose to create the ring for my pinky because it is a finger I’ve never worn a ring on before. It is as overlooked as women can be in their own lives. It felt powerful to take a traditional symbol of commitment to someone else (big, bold engagement rings) and say, ‘This time, I’m choosing myself.’ I still wear my engagement ring proudly, and these two rings are not mutually exclusive. Loving yourself makes you better able to love others.”

The Symbolism of the Design

Featuring an inverted triangular stone, the ring highlights the “divine feminine” with its downward-pointing white sapphire. Although not everyone may splurge on these rings due to the price, many women find that investing in a piece of jewelry symbolizing self-love is life-changing. Some even gift them to best friends, moms, sisters, or daughters as a daily reminder of inner strength. The message is clear: “I’m beautiful, smart, independent, and I rock!” Far from being selfish, this self-love movement encourages women to honor who they are, understand what they need, and set firm boundaries.

A Nod to History

Interestingly, Victorian women once wore left pinky rings to indicate they were single and not looking for marriage. Over time, rings have communicated everything from marital status to divorce and purity. Today, the new pinky promise rings send a simple yet powerful message: “I love me.” Even if you don’t join the trend, the meaning behind it might inspire you. So, what are your thoughts on the pinky ring movement? Could you use a reminder of self-love too? Share your thoughts in the comments!
