He Took a Photo of Diana—Only Later Did He Notice What Was Really Captured

Princess Diana, known today as one of the world’s most beloved style icons, was once a quiet, unassuming nursery school teacher whose life was forever changed by one unexpected photograph.

In 1980, long before her royal fame, Diana was just 19 and dating Prince Charles when photographer Arthur Edwards captured an image that unintentionally made headlines. At the time, Edwards was newly assigned to the royal beat and eager to photograph the young woman at the center of growing public interest. He discovered where Diana worked and, after receiving permission from the preschool’s owner, accompanied her and two students to a nearby park.

During the brief photo session, Diana stood in the sunlight, unaware that the angle of the light made her skirt appear see-through, subtly outlining her legs. The photo, though entirely innocent, quickly spread across British newspapers and marked Diana’s first brush with the unforgiving glare of media attention. “It was purely chance,” Edwards later said. “I never meant for the image to look that way. But it became an iconic moment.”

Diana reportedly told Prince Charles she was mortified and didn’t want to be remembered as “the girlfriend without a petticoat.” Still, the public fascination with her only grew. That candid image would be the beginning of a complex and often intrusive relationship between Diana and the press — one that would define much of her public life.

Despite that rocky introduction to fame, Edwards continued photographing Diana for years. He watched her evolve from a shy young woman into a global humanitarian known as the “People’s Princess.” Her compassion broke barriers — she famously held the hands of AIDS patients and embraced individuals with leprosy, challenging stigmas with simple acts of human kindness.

Diana’s empathy and warmth reshaped the public’s view of the royal family and left a legacy carried on by her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry. Their dedication to charitable causes, alongside Catherine, Princess of Wales, continues to reflect Diana’s enduring influence.

Years later, Edwards would reflect on the pressures of royal life and the intense media scrutiny that followed anyone who entered it. In 2017, he commented on Meghan Markle’s then-future role in the family, warning of the unique challenges ahead. “It’s a lot to handle,” he said. “If you can do it, great. If not, it’s better to walk away.”

And in 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan did just that — stepping back from royal duties and forging a new life in California, echoing Diana’s own struggles to balance public duty with personal peace.

That single photograph — a moment of chance beneath a sunny sky — would be the start of a royal story that still captures hearts to this day.
