Keir Starmer has responded to comments made by US Vice President JD Vance, who criticized Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy for his reluctance to engage in peace talks with Donald Trump. Vance also appeared to dismiss the UK and France’s proposed ‘coalition of the willing’ for peacekeeping, suggesting that economic incentives for Americans would be a better security guarantee than foreign troops. Starmer defended British troops, praising their bravery and sacrifices in conflicts like Iraq and Afghanistan, emphasizing their role in global security. Vance later denied targeting the UK or France, stating his comments were misinterpreted. However, his remarks sparked anger among British MPs, including Tory shadow defence secretary James Cartlidge, who highlighted the UK’s significant contributions to past conflicts alongside the US.
