Gorilla Grabs Man in Wheelchair at Zoo—Zookeepers’ Response Leaves Visitors Shocked

For most visitors, a zoo is just a place to spend a few hours. For Samuel Hayes, it was a lifelong passion. After thirty years as a zookeeper, he had cared for countless animals, forming bonds that few could understand. Even in his seventies, confined to a wheelchair after a back injury, he returned every Saturday to visit the enclosures. His favorite spot was the gorilla area, where he had once raised a female gorilla from infancy, nursing her back to health after a rescue from an illegal trafficking situation.

On a quiet autumn afternoon, Samuel wheeled himself near the gorilla enclosure as he always did. The air was crisp, and the zoo was nearly empty. As he hummed softly, the female gorilla emerged from the shadows. She moved slowly at first, her dark eyes locking onto him. In a sudden moment that stunned onlookers, she reached through the bars, gripping the handles of his wheelchair. The chair lurched forward, and Samuel found himself pulled toward the enclosure. Visitors gasped, staff shouted, and panic rippled through the crowd as zookeepers rushed to assess the situation.

Then, something extraordinary happened. Rather than harming him, the gorilla recognized him. She gently touched his face, the familiar motions from their years together. Samuel whispered, identifying himself, and the gorilla responded with calm and deliberate movements. Her immense strength was undeniable, yet she cradled him without aggression, rocking slightly as she allowed the moment of reunion to unfold. Slowly, she guided the wheelchair back toward the barrier, letting him return to safety while she maintained a watchful, protective stance.

Samuel Hayes’ decades-long bond with the gorilla endured beyond time and separation. That day, it was clear that the kindness and trust he had shown as a keeper had not been forgotten. After the incident, the enclosure was temporarily closed for safety upgrades, but Samuel continued his visits under supervision. Whenever he arrived, the gorilla would appear, sit near him, and silently share their enduring connection—a testament to the power of compassion, memory, and trust across species.
