Georgia Woman, 55, Dies in Tragic Incident at Funeral — Full Story

Grief and Shock

“It’s hard for us to wrap our minds around this,” said a grieving brother. “It’s just a couple of days in, and you don’t want anger. But we need justice.”

Families had gathered outside the Gus Thornhill Funeral Home in East Point to mourn loved ones. The air was heavy with sorrow and reflection. Yet, the quiet was shattered by sudden gunfire, turning a place of remembrance into a scene of tragedy.

What Happened

Authorities confirmed that 55-year-old Ina Chambers was shot and killed in a drive-by attack outside the funeral home. Another woman was injured. Police say multiple suspects were involved, but no arrests have been made.

The shooting occurred while four families were inside mourning. East Point Police Chief Shawn Buchanan called it an “outrage.” “They’re trying to bury their loved ones,” he said. “For someone to take that away… our team will not rest until justice is served.”

Remembering Ina Chambers

Outside her DeKalb County home, friends and family released balloons in her memory. Her husband, Phil Chambers, expressed his heartbreak: “I lost my wife,” he told Fox5 Atlanta.

Her older brother, Efrem Jenkins, described her as vibrant and devoted. “She was the life of the party and very biblical,” he said. “My little sister has been taken away. For those who knew her, you know she was the best.”

Jenkins also addressed those responsible: “The family is small, and it’s getting smaller by the day… please stop.”

Her Heroic Act

Chambers had taken her grandchildren, ages 5 and 1, to the funeral. When the shots rang out, she pushed them and others out of harm’s way, shielding herself. “She protected them,” her daughter said. “They fell down, but they’re perfectly fine.”

Police Investigation

East Point Police continue to investigate and urge the public to provide tips. Authorities confirmed that Chambers was outside the funeral home when the attack occurred.

Tributes and Memories

Family and friends have honored Chambers online. Her daughter Jamya Cooper wrote, “You didn’t deserve this. I love youuu mommmy.”

Friend Narvella Gray Dial shared: “Ina was the best friend, mother, grandmother, wife, auntie… a good person anyone could have in their life. I will miss her!!!”

As the investigation unfolds, Chambers’ family focuses on honoring her memory while hoping for answers. Their plea remains clear: justice for a woman taken too soon in a senseless act of violence.
