Shock and Mourning as Anthony Geary Dies Abroad
Colleagues, fans, and loved ones expressed deep sadness following the death of Anthony Geary, the eight-time Daytime Emmy Award winner best known for portraying Luke Spencer on General Hospital.
Geary passed away quietly on December 14, 2025, in Amsterdam, Netherlands. His husband, Claudio Gama, confirmed the news in a statement to TV Insider.
Life Abroad and Final Days
Gama described the death as unexpected. “It was a shock for me, our families, and our friends. For more than 30 years, Tony has been my friend, my companion, my husband,” he said.
The couple had made Amsterdam their home for years, living with their 16-year-old cat, Max. After retiring from television in 2015, Geary frequently spoke about his love for the city.
According to TV Insider, complications from a scheduled operation three days earlier led to his passing. Shortly before his death, Gama shared a quiet Instagram update, noting that Geary was “away” and expected to return Monday.
Tributes from General Hospital Family
Frank Valentini, executive producer of General Hospital, expressed heartbreak in a statement to People. “Tony was a brilliant actor and set the bar that we continue to strive for,” Valentini said. “His legacy, and that of Luke Spencer’s, will live on through generations of GH cast members. We send our sincerest sympathies to his husband, family, and friends. May he rest in peace.”
ABC Entertainment also honored Geary, acknowledging his decades-long contribution to television. “Anthony captivated audiences for decades and earned a record eight Daytime Emmy Awards. The 1981 Luke and Laura wedding was a landmark moment that drew tens of millions of viewers and became part of television history. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones and colleagues.”
Co-Stars Share Personal Tributes
Genie Francis, who played Laura opposite Geary, shared a heartfelt farewell on X. She described feeling anxious the morning of his death and immediately regretted not speaking to him in years. Francis remembered Geary as “a powerhouse,” with a magnetic on-screen presence. She praised his offbeat personality and concluded her tribute with a simple, heartfelt goodbye.
John Stamos, who worked with Geary early on General Hospital, recalled the actor’s mentorship. “There was no autopilot with Tony — ever,” Stamos wrote. He described staying late on set just to watch Geary perform, calling him a lasting influence in his own career.
Beyond General Hospital
While Geary is best remembered for his role as Luke Spencer, he also appeared on other major shows, including All in the Family, where he played Roger. Coincidentally, his death on December 14 coincided with the passing of Rob Reiner, who starred as Michael “Meathead” Stivic on the same series.
