Gene Hackman’s Daughters Spotted Out for the First Time Since Their Father Was Found Dead

Gene Hackman’s daughters were seen in public for the first time following the shocking death of their father and his wife, Betsy Arakawa. The sisters, Elizabeth and Leslie Hackman, appeared composed as they dined together at a California restaurant, attempting to process their immense loss.

On Thursday, the two were spotted stepping out together, having a quiet meal at an all-day breakfast chain. Photos obtained by DailyMail.com showed them arriving in a gray SUV, their expressions calm despite the tragedy that had unfolded just a day earlier.

The sighting immediately sparked conversations online. Some social media users criticized their composed demeanor, questioning how they could appear so relaxed so soon after their father’s passing. “I know people grieve differently, but when your dad was found the way he was, and with an investigation ongoing, they look way too happy and relaxed,” one person commented. Others echoed similar sentiments, with remarks such as “They look very happy… why?” and “This whole thing is just weird and strange.”

Leslie had previously spoken publicly about their father’s death, sharing that they hadn’t spoken to him in a few months but that everything had seemed normal. Gene Hackman’s daughters had always described him as a private man, adding that he had been in good health before his sudden passing. Now, as the investigation continues, the family awaits more answers.

Authorities first discovered the bodies of Hackman and Arakawa in their Santa Fe home on February 26. A caretaker placed a distressing 911 call just before 2 p.m., informing emergency responders that they were unable to enter the home but could see two unresponsive individuals through a window.

“No, dude, they’re not moving. Just send somebody out here really quick,” the caller was heard saying in the audio obtained by CNN.

Sheriff deputies arrived shortly after at the couple’s home on Old Sunset Trail, where they found Hackman, Arakawa, and one of their dogs deceased. Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza later confirmed that there were no immediate signs of foul play, though the cause of death remains undetermined.

As authorities continue their investigation, toxicology tests have been ordered to rule out possible carbon monoxide poisoning or other environmental hazards. A search warrant affidavit detailed that while there were no apparent gas leaks, investigators found an open bottle of prescription pills near Arakawa’s body, along with scattered pills on the floor. Additionally, a space heater had been moved, and another of their three dogs was found deceased in a bathroom closet.

Hackman, who had retired from Hollywood nearly two decades ago, had built a quiet life with Arakawa in their Santa Fe home. His legacy in film, however, remains undeniable. His career spanned decades, with two Academy Awards to his name.

The actor’s rise to fame was unconventional. After serving in the Marines, Hackman worked odd jobs—including driving trucks and serving as a doorman—before turning to acting. He gained recognition in 1967’s Bonnie and Clyde, later cementing his status as a Hollywood legend with roles in The French ConnectionUnforgiven, and The Conversation. His portrayal of Lex Luthor in the Superman franchise remains one of his most recognizable performances.

His personal life was equally private. Hackman met Betsy Arakawa in the mid-1980s while she was working at a gym in California. The couple eventually moved to Santa Fe, settling into a peaceful life away from the Hollywood spotlight. Together, they adopted three German shepherds and shared a love for independent films. Despite his fame, Hackman largely avoided the public eye, making only rare appearances at events in his later years.

Following their sudden deaths, speculation has grown online regarding the circumstances. Some social media users have theorized that Arakawa may have taken her own life in grief after Hackman passed away. Others pointed to the presence of scattered pills as a possible indicator of foul play.

“Sounds staged, especially the scattered pills part…” one person commented. Another speculated, “Maybe he collapsed in the mudroom, and she found him and couldn’t bear it. The dog could’ve gotten into the pills or died from lack of food or water.”

Amidst the swirling speculation, some urged others to avoid making assumptions. “Let’s stop jumping to conclusions until the investigation is complete,” one social media user wrote.

Hackman’s nephew, Tim Hackman, had revealed that the family had initially expected Betsy to outlive Gene and handle his funeral arrangements. With both of them now gone, plans have been thrown into uncertainty. “Now with this, everything changes. I don’t know what happens next,” Tim admitted.

As the investigation unfolds, one thing remains certain—Gene Hackman’s impact on the world of film will endure, leaving behind a legacy that fans and colleagues continue to honor. Meanwhile, his family is left grappling with the heartbreaking and unexpected loss of both him and his wife.
