Authorities quickly responded after a neighbor raised concerns. Deputies performed a welfare check and found the bodies, with gas company and fire department personnel assisting to ensure no toxic fumes lingered.

Despite the tragedy, Elizabeth painted a picture of Gene’s peaceful retirement. After retiring in 2004, Gene and Betsy moved to New Mexico, where he embraced a quiet life of painting. Elizabeth also revealed that Gene’s favorite film was The French Connection, a role that solidified his place as a Hollywood icon.

Gene Hackman’s retirement followed a health scare in 2009. He shared that a stress test alarmed doctors, prompting him to step away from Hollywood. Although Elizabeth didn’t comment directly on his health, she recalled a public sighting last March, where Gene appeared frail and walked with a cane, supported by Betsy.
