Gene Hackman shared sweet wife detail before both found dead in home

Gene Hackman, the Oscar-winning actor known for his iconic portrayal of Lex Luthor in Superman alongside Christopher Reeve, has passed away at the age of 95. His death occurred on February 26, 2025, at his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he was found alongside his wife, Betsy Arakawa, and their pet dog. Authorities conducted a welfare check and discovered the bodies at around 1:45 p.m. There were no immediate signs of foul play, and the cause of death is under investigation.

Hackman and Arakawa’s relationship began in the mid-1980s when they met at a California gym where she worked part-time. Despite their significant age difference—Hackman was 30 years older than Arakawa—the couple formed a deep bond and married in 1991. After their wedding, they settled in a beautiful home on Old Sunset Trail, nestled in the scenic Santa Fe area, where they embraced a quiet life away from the public eye.

Hackman had officially retired from acting in the mid-2000s, with his last film role in 2004’s Welcome to Mooseport. His decision to retire stemmed from a combination of personal health issues and his growing dissatisfaction with the pressures of the film industry. In a 2008 interview, Hackman shared that the stress of the business had become too overwhelming, and a health scare prompted him to step away from Hollywood. A doctor had advised him that his heart was not in a condition to endure the physical and emotional stress of acting.

After retiring, Hackman kept a low profile, occasionally making rare public appearances. In 2023, he was spotted at a Wendy’s drive-thru, a simple act that made headlines. He and Arakawa enjoyed spending quiet evenings together, often watching DVDs of small, independent films, including those featuring comedian Eddie Izzard.

Hackman is survived by three children from a previous marriage. He leaves behind a lasting legacy as one of Hollywood’s finest actors, remembered not only for his work on screen but also for his quiet, peaceful life with Arakawa in their Santa Fe home.
