Gene Hackman and Wife Found Dead in Santa Fe
Tragic Discovery
Two-time Oscar winner Gene Hackman and his wife, classical pianist Betsy Arakawa, were found dead in their Santa Fe home on Wednesday afternoon. Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed the deaths, noting that there was no sign of foul play. However, he did not provide a cause of death or details on when the couple passed away.
Hackman’s Life and Legacy
Hackman, 95, celebrated his birthday in January but had appeared frail in a public sighting last year, sparking concern among fans. Married to Arakawa since 1991, the actor had a remarkable 40-year career in Hollywood. He retired quietly in the late 2000s, hinting during a 2004 Larry King interview that he had no upcoming projects.
Over his career, Hackman starred in over 70 films and won two Oscars: Best Actor for The French Connection and Best Supporting Actor for his role in Unforgiven.

Retirement and Health Concerns
In 2009, Hackman shared that his retirement was influenced by a stress test that alarmed his doctors. He recalled, “The straw that broke the camel’s back was actually a stress test that I took in New York.” The doctor advised him to avoid further physical strain due to his heart condition.
Post-retirement, Hackman pursued less-stressful hobbies like painting, fishing, and writing. He found writing relaxing, saying, “I don’t picture myself as a great writer, but I really enjoy the process.”
Survived by Family
Hackman is survived by his three children—Christopher, Elizabeth Jean, and Leslie Anne—from his marriage to his late ex-wife, Faye Maltese.
