Gen-Z Does Not Like ‘Passive Aggressive’ Thumbs Up Emoji

There’s a lot to learn about the younger generation, especially Gen-Z, who often have views and behaviors that differ from those of previous generations. Let’s dive into why something as simple as a thumbs-up emoji could be seen in a different light by them.

Understanding these differences can help bridge the gap between generations. While Baby Boomers and Gen-X had their own quirks that puzzled others, today, it’s Gen-Z who are baffling everyone with their unique way of seeing things.

Interestingly, many young people today see the thumbs-up emoji as ‘passive-aggressive’ and even ‘triggering’ for some. This little symbol, which many of us use to signify approval or agreement, doesn’t quite land the same way with this new generation.

One Gen-Z individual shared her experience starting a new job where workplace communication is often done through Microsoft Teams. She noticed her colleagues frequently use the thumbs-up emoji to react to messages. However, she found it a bit unsettling and preferred to use heart reactions or actual responses, such as ‘Great!’ or ‘Thanks!’

She wondered if others felt similarly and opened up the conversation by asking, “Does anyone else find the thumbs-up emoji unsettling?”

A fellow younger user, aged 24, chimed in, “For us younger folks, a thumbs-up can feel quite passive-aggressive.”

Another person commented, “It can feel unsettling because it’s impersonal. You seem like someone who prefers genuine interactions, and that might be why it doesn’t sit well with you.”

There’s clearly a difference in how the thumbs-up emoji is perceived across generations. While for many of us it remains a harmless, quick way to show agreement, for Gen-Z, it might come off differently.

What are your thoughts on this changing perception of emojis? It’s fascinating to see how something small can carry such different meanings across age groups. Feel free to share this article with friends who might find it interesting, too!
