Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk was shot on Wednesday afternoon during a campus event at Utah Valley University (UVU). According to his spokesperson, “Charlie Kirk has been shot at Utah Valley University. Condition unknown.” Video from the event shows Kirk speaking under a white pop-up tent when a shot rang out.
The crowd immediately scattered, with onlookers shouting, “Run, run, run!” Seconds before the shooting, Kirk was answering a question about transgender mass shooters in America. Support and prayers poured in on social media from prominent figures, including President Donald Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and California Governor Gavin Newsom.
Trump wrote, “We must all pray for Charlie Kirk, who has been shot. A great guy from top to bottom. GOD BLESS HIM!” Newsom called the attack “disgusting, vile, and reprehensible” and urged Americans to reject all forms of political violence. Utah Valley University officials confirmed the shooting occurred around 12:20 p.m., explaining that the shots came from a building approximately 200 yards away.
Kirk was immediately taken away by security, and the campus was closed for the rest of the day. Authorities confirmed they had a suspect in custody. Other political leaders condemned the attack, emphasizing that political violence has no place in the United States. Maryland Governor Wes Moore, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, and former Vice President Kamala Harris all released statements condemning the incident and calling for unity and safety.
