What began as an ordinary evening in rural North Carolina turned into a nightmare beyond imagination. Four little girls under the age of seven perished in a house fire, and their mother is now facing serious charges.
A Father’s Shattered Heart
On August 30, flames ripped through the Ellis family’s Columbus County home, trapping Kalani, 7, Kendall, 5, Josephina, 3, and Sophia Melvin, 2 inside. First responders arrived nine minutes after being called, but the fire had already engulfed the home, making it too dangerous to enter. Two other children, including an 11-year-old sibling, managed to escape.
In a joint statement, Henry County Sheriff Bill Rogers and Columbus County Fire Marshal Shannon Blackman called the fire an ‘unimaginable tragedy’ and urged the public to support the family.
The girls’ father, Patrick Ellis, was left heartbroken. “My heart is shattered beyond words at the loss of my daughters,” he said in a statement, as neighbors built a makeshift memorial of toys and flowers outside the charred home.
Mother Arrested
Days later, authorities arrested 28-year-old Reagan Noelle Powers, the girls’ mother, accusing her of leaving the children in the care of an 11-year-old with no adult supervision. Powers now faces four counts of involuntary manslaughter and four counts of felony child abuse causing serious injury.
She was booked into the Columbus County Detention Center but released within an hour after posting a $400,000 bond.
At her bond hearing, the judge said she could face up to 59 months for each manslaughter count and 88 months for each negligent child abuse count if convicted.
Remembering the Sisters
At a memorial service attended by more than 100 people, the girls were remembered as “bright lights who brought joy to everyone around them.”

The devastating case drew national attention when NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal stepped in to help cover funeral expenses.
“As a father, my heart is broken for the Ellis family,” O’Neal said. “What I can offer is love, support, and a promise that their lives will not be forgotten.”
Together with the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, O’Neal’s donation fully covered the costs of honoring the sisters, lifting what officials described as a “heavy financial burden” for the grieving family.
Community Rallies
A GoFundMe launched to support the Ellis family has already raised over $15,000, with messages of love and solidarity pouring in.
Neighbors continue to gather outside the family’s home, leaving toys, flowers, and prayers for the four young lives cut short.
