Nick Reiner’s Lawyer Abruptly Quits, Family Breaks Silence
Lawyer Steps Down
Nick Reiner’s family issued a statement after his attorney, Alan Jackson, abruptly withdrew from the case on January 7, 2025. Nick, 32, faces charges for the violent slaying of his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner. Jackson announced his departure in a Los Angeles courtroom at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center, saying the circumstances were “beyond our control” and that he could no longer represent Nick.
“We have no choice but to withdraw and ask to be relieved,” Jackson said.
Family Responds
Nick’s family released a brief statement following the change in legal representation. “They have the utmost trust in the legal process and will not comment further on matters related to the legal proceedings,” the statement read.
For now, the case has moved to public defender Kimberly Greene. The court approved the switch, and Nick’s arraignment has been pushed to February 23.
Nick appeared in court in a tan jumpsuit, shaved head, and agreed to the rescheduled date. He was then returned to the Twin Towers Correctional Facility.
Jackson Defends His Client
Outside the courthouse, Jackson told reporters that he remained committed to Nick’s best interests. He also stated that Nick is “not guilty” of murdering his parents.
“Circumstances beyond our control, and beyond Nick’s control, made it impossible to continue our representation,” Jackson said. He added that he and his team remain confident the legal process will reveal the true facts of the case.
Jackson also explained that legal and ethical obligations prevent him from commenting further.
Public Defender Takes Over
Public defender Kimberly Greene confirmed she had only spoken to Nick for 30 seconds on Wednesday morning. Her team learned of the case developments the night before.
Ricardo Garcia, part of Greene’s team, said, “On behalf of the public defender’s office, we are incredibly sorry and understand the pain the Reiner family is going through. Our hearts go out to them.”
Background on the Case
Nick was arrested about six hours after his parents, Rob, 78, and Michele, 70, were found dead in their Los Angeles home on December 14, 2024. The night before, the family reportedly had a heated argument at a Conan O’Brien-hosted Christmas party.
Rob and Michele Reiner also had two other children: Jake, 34, and Romy, 29, in addition to Nick. Rob also adopted Tracy Reiner during his marriage to ex-wife Penny Marshall.
Following his arrest, Nick was charged with two counts of first-degree murder with a special circumstance of multiple murders. If convicted, he could face life without parole. The death penalty remains undecided, according to Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman.
Social Media Reacts
The abrupt lawyer exit sparked speculation online. Many users called it a “plot twist” in the case. Some suggested it signals defense strategy collapse, while others questioned whether Nick could mount a successful defense without his former lawyer.
