Trump’s Health Back in the Spotlight
Social media erupted this week after Donald Trump’s health drew renewed attention. Observers noticed a large bruise on his hand, which appeared partially concealed with a layer of foundation. The mark fueled speculation, especially following Trump’s recent diagnosis of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI)—a condition in which leg veins become damaged and fail to function properly.
Annual Check-Up at Walter Reed
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that Trump visited Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on October 10 for his routine yearly check-up. “On Friday morning, President Trump will visit Walter Reed for a planned meeting and remarks with the troops,” Leavitt said. “While there, he will also stop by for his annual check-up before returning to the White House. The president is considering traveling to the Middle East shortly afterward.”
CNN noted that Trump had previously visited Walter Reed in April for his “annual physical,” raising questions about having two check-ups in one year.
Expert Perspective
Medical experts say it’s unusual but not unprecedented. Jacob Appel, a professor at the Icahn School of Medicine and a presidential health historian, told McClatchy News:
“It is rare, but not unheard of, for the president to have more than one annual check-up without a specific medical cause.”
Exam Results: “Exceptional Health”
Trump’s April exam documented his weight, body mass index, surgeries, mental health screenings, cholesterol, and blood pressure. Yesterday, his physician declared him in “exceptional health.”
Navy Captain Sean Barbabella wrote in a memo released by the White House:
“President Donald J. Trump remains in exceptional health, exhibiting strong cardiovascular, pulmonary, neurological, and physical performance.”
The memo also noted that Trump received his yearly flu shot and a COVID-19 booster, and that his cardiac age measured roughly 14 years younger than his chronological age.
Semiannual Physical?
Some critics questioned why Trump had two exams in one year. The president labeled it a “semiannual physical.” Before his check-up, he told the Miami Herald:
“I think I’m in great shape, but I’ll let you know… Is there wood around here? I’ll knock on it.”
Trump Boasts of Fitness
During his visit with Navy sailors, Trump praised his fitness and past medical evaluations. He claimed his former White House physician, Dr. Ronny Jackson, said he was in “the best health of all the presidents.” Speaking to the sailors, Trump recounted:
“He was also the doctor for Barack Hussein Obama. Have you heard of him? He was a doctor for a man named Bush. And at a press conference, they asked him, ‘Who’s in the best shape, who’s the healthiest, who’s the strongest, who’s the best physical specimen of the three?’ He said, ‘That’s easy. President Donald Trump!’ And I said, ‘I love this guy!’”
