Cold Weather Brings Higher Heater Use
As temperatures drop across the northern hemisphere, more people turn to space heaters for warmth. However, firefighters are issuing a strong warning: use them safely — or risk disaster.
Power Strips and Space Heaters Don’t Mix
The Umatilla County Fire District in Oregon warns against plugging space heaters into power strips. These strips can’t handle the high electrical load. As a result, they may overheat and catch fire.
In one Ohio case, a space heater plugged into a power strip ignited a couch. Within minutes, flames engulfed the entire home.
Space Heaters Can Reach 600°F
These compact devices can get extremely hot — up to 600 degrees Fahrenheit. That heat makes them dangerous if used improperly.
Firefighter-Approved Safety Tips
To avoid tragedy, follow these simple guidelines:
-
✅ Plug space heaters directly into wall outlets.
-
🚫 Never use power strips or extension cords.
-
🔥 Keep a 3-foot safety zone around the heater — no curtains, furniture, or flammable items nearby.
-
💤 Only run heaters while you’re in the room. Turn them off before sleeping or leaving.
-
🪑 Place them on flat, stable surfaces — not on furniture, rugs, or elevated areas.
